The Choral is based on a story by Alan Bennett and is set in 1916 in the fictional mill town of Ramsden in Yorkshire, during World War I. The story follows the local Choral Society, whose male members enlist in the Army. The Society recruit Dr. Henry Guthrie, who had been working in Germany up to the outbreak of war, to be their choir master. He recruits older men, women, wounded servicemen and teenagers to fill the gaps left by those now in the Army. They are to perform Edward Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, chosen because of its English origins rather than something by a German composer. Together, they experience the joy of singing while the young boys grapple with their impending conscription into the army.
Starring Ralph Fiennes and Roger Alam. It has been reviewed as being a quiet and consistent pleasure and an unsentimental but deeply felt drama.
